IndyCar: Simon Pagenaud takes pole for 2019 Iowa 300

Simon Pagenaud stayed hot by taking the pole position for the 2019 IndyCar season’s 12th race, the Iowa 300, at Iowa Speedway.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud became the first driver to take three pole positions in the 2019 IndyCar season by taking the pole position for the 17-race season’s 12th race at Iowa Speedway, the Iowa 300.

Pagenaud also took the pole position for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May and for last Sunday’s race at Exhibition Place. He won both of these races.

Pagenaud took the pole position for Saturday night’s 300-lap race around the four-turn, 0.894-mile (1.439-kilometer) Iowa Speedway oval in Newton, Iowa by recording a two-lap average speed of 180.073 miles per hour (35.7455 total seconds) in his #22 Chevrolet.

He led a top three Chevrolet and a top three Team Penske sweep on top of the speed chart in this qualifying session, as Will Power qualified in second place in his #12 Chevrolet and Josef Newgarden qualified in third in his #2 Chevrolet.

Honda drivers took the next nine positions on the starting grid for this race, led by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato in fourth place in his #30 Honda. Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe qualified in fifth in his #5 Honda ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in sixth in his #27 Honda.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Marcus Ericsson are set to round out the top 10 on the starting grid after qualifying in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #15 Honda, #9 Honda, #28 Honda and #7 Honda, respectively.

Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta and Dale Coyne Racing rookie Santino Ferrucci qualified in 11th and 12th place in their #88 Honda and #19 Honda, respectively. A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ Tony Kanaan was the highest qualifying non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver for this race. He qualified in 13th in his #14 Chevrolet.

The second of two practice sessions for the Iowa 300 is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET this evening. The race itself, the 12th race on the 2019 IndyCar schedule, is scheduled to take place tomorrow evening. NBC Sports Network is set to broadcast it live beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET, and it is set to begin shortly thereafter at 7:10 p.m. ET.
