Josef Newgarden dominated the Iowa 300, the 12th race of the 2019 IndyCar season, at Iowa Speedway to secure his series-high fourth victory of the season.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden dominated the rain-delayed 12th race of the 17-race 2019 IndyCar season, the Iowa 300, at Iowa Speedway to earn his second victory at the track in the last four seasons and his series-high fourth victory of the 2019 season.

Newgarden started this 300-lap race around the four-turn, 0.894-mile (1.439-kilometer) Iowa Speedway oval in Newton, Iowa in third place in his #2 Chevrolet, and he won it by 2.8527 seconds over Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in second in his #9 Honda.

Dixon had a terrible race as a whole, as he found himself running in 16th place and one lap off the lead lap late, but he utilized the race’s fifth and final caution flag period to make his final pit stop for new tires to turn a disastrous race into a solid result.

Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe, another two-time winner at Iowa Speedway, finished in a season-high third place in his #5 Honda after winning the race at the track last year.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud, who started the race from the pole position, ended up finishing in fourth place in his #22 Chevrolet, continuing the trend of race polesitters at Iowa Speedway never finishing on the podium in 13 races at the track. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot tied his season-high result by finishing in fifth in his #21 Chevrolet.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi finished in sixth place in his #27 Honda ahead of teammate Zach Veach in a season-high seventh in his #26 Honda.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal, Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais and A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ Tony Kanaan rounded out the top 10 by finishing in eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #15 Honda, #18 Honda and #14 Chevrolet, respectively.

This race featured a total of seven lead changes among five drivers. Aside of Newgarden, who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 245 laps led, four other drivers led at least one lap of the race. These drivers were Team Penske’s Will Power, who threw away a potential podium finish with an improper pit entry late in the race that resulted in a stop and go penalty, as well as Dixon, Pagenaud and Bourdais.

Newgarden has now led 757 of the 1,200 laps that have been completed at Iowa Speedway since the 2016 season, and he has done so despite the fact that he led only one lap in the race in the 2017 season.

In addition to the five caution flag periods that this race featured, it also featured a red flag period for rain after the start was delayed by nearly five hours as a result of rain to begin with. Of the 22 drivers who started this race, 17 finished it and seven finished on the lead lap.
