Formula 1: Max Verstappen takes first career pole for 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen took the first pole position of his Formula 1 career for the 2019 season’s 12th race, the Hungarian Grand Prix, at the Hungaroring.
Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen became the 100th different polesitter in Formula 1 history by taking his first career pole position for the 12th race on the 21-race 2019 schedule, the Hungarian Grand Prix, at the Hungaroring.
Verstappen took the pole position for this 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.722-mile (4.381-kilometer) Hungaroring road course in Mogyorod, Hungary by recording a top lap time of 74.572 seconds (131.406 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for the race.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Valtteri Bottas qualified in second place and is set to start alongside the 21-year-old Dutchman on the front row after recording a top lap time that was just 0.018 seconds (0.032 miles per hour) slower than that of Verstappen in this round of qualifying.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Scuderia Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top five by qualifying in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly, McLaren teammates Lando Norris, a rookie, and Carlos Sainz Jr., Rich Energy Haas’ Romain Grosjean and Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top 10 by qualifying in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg, Scuderia Toro Rosso teammates Alexander Albon, a rookie, and Daniil Kvyat, Alfa Romeo Racing rookie Antonio Giovinazzi and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen were eliminated following the second round of qualifying for this race and are set to start in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.
ROKiT Williams Racing rookie George Russell, SportPesa Racing Point’s Sergio Perez, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and Williams Racing’s Robert Kubica were eliminated following the first round of qualifying for the race and are set to start in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.
Russell’s qualifying effort was his career-high qualifying effort and by far the best qualifying effort of the season for Williams.
