In an interview with FanSided’s Mark Carman, NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin discussed FedEx’s safety initiative regarding distracted walking and distracted driving.

Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin recently caught up with FanSided’s own Mark Carman to discuss the safety initiative being promoted by his primary sponsor, FedEx, ahead of this Sunday’s race.

Hamlin, a 34-time race winner at the Cup Series level, will be running special FedEx Cares/Safe Kids Worldwide paint scheme on his #11 Toyota to help raise awareness about distracted walking and distracted driving in this Sunday’s race, the Go Bowling at The Glen, at Watkins Glen International.

Leading up to this 90-lap race around the eight-turn, 2.454-mile (3.949-kilometer) Watkins Glen International road course in Watkins Glen, New York, here is what the 38-year-old Chesterfield, Virginia native had to say about the matter in his interview with Carman.

"“People are on their phones constantly. It doesn’t matter. We’re looking down. How many times…we’ve all been walking and texting and run right into something, right? Well, if you’re doing it on the street, it’s probably a bad idea.“Really the awareness is about the safe kids worldwide. I’ve worked with them before and we’ve walked some kids to school. That’s really what we’re focusing on. We’re about to start school season all over the U.S. and so many kids are going to be walking to school or walking to the bus stop or whatever it might be.“Let’s try to make both the drivers and the kids and parents aware. Let’s be a little bit more aware this school season more so than we were last year.”"

When Carman asked Hamlin whether or not he texts and drives, Hamlin didn’t hesitate to give a resounding answer.

"“No. No way.”"

Hamlin is set to run this FedEx Cares/Safe Kids Worldwide paint scheme on his #11 Toyota in this Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen International coming off a victory in this past Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway. This victory was his third victory of the season and his first in nearly four months. He also won the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in mid-February and the race at Texas Motor Speedway in late March.

With three victories so far this season, he is tied with Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski and trails only teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. on the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series wins list. He sits in fourth place in both the championship standings and the playoff picture.
