Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix over Max Verstappen at the Hungaroring to secure his eighth victory of the 2019 Formula 1 season.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton secured his series-high eighth victory of the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season by winning the 12th race of the season, the Hungarian Grand Prix, at the Hungaroring over Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.

Hamilton started this 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.722-mile (4.381-kilometer) Hungaroring road course in Mogyorod, Hungary in third place, and he won it by 17.796 seconds over Verstappen following a brilliant strategy call by Mercedes, a call with which Hamilton originally disagreed.

Unable to get around Verstappen for the race lead with both drivers on hard tires following their first pit stops, Hamilton made a second pit stop for medium tires. But Verstappen did not come into the pits.

As a result, Hamilton was able to close the gap to the race polesitter on newer and faster tires, and he was able take the lead with four laps remaining before Verstappen himself made his final pit stop for soft tires before setting the fastest lap time of the race.

This race featured a total of three lead changes among these two drivers, with Verstappen leading 59 laps and Hamilton leading the other 11.

Scuderia Ferrari teammates Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc finished well behind Hamilton and Verstappen in third and fourth place, respectively. McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. impressively finished in fifth for the second consecutive race. His three-race streak of top six finishes is the second longest streak in Formula 1 behind Verstappen’s 21-race streak of top five finishes.

Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly, Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen, Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, McLaren rookie Lando Norris and Scuderia Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Bottas started the race in second place, but he damaged his front wing on the first lap of the race and could not completely recover after falling to 20th (last) when he came into the pits for a front wing change.

Of the 20 drivers who started the race, only Rich Energy Haas’ Romain Grosjean failed to finish it. Of the 19 drivers who finished the race, only four finished on the lead lap.
