By Asher Fair
Follow along with our live qualifying updates for the 2019 IndyCar season’s fifth and final oval race and 15th overall race, the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
A total of 22 drivers are set to compete in this Saturday night’s IndyCar race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. This race is the 15th of 17 races on the 2019 schedule, and it is the fifth and final oval race of these 17 races.
This driver total of 22 is tied for the lowest of the season. Three of the first four oval races this season also featured this season-low total of 22 drivers, but the first oval race of the season, the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway featured its traditional season-high of 33 drivers after 36 drivers entered and three were bumped.
Three of the 10 road or street course races that have been contested so far this season also featured a season-low driver total of only 22. All three of these races were street course races, including the two races at the Raceway on Belle Isle and the race on the streets of Toronto.

Entering the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, only four different drivers representing two different teams have won an oval race and/or taken a pole position for an oval race this season.
Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud took the pole position for the Indy 500 before going on to win it. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato took the pole position for the race at Texas Motor Speedway before Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden won it. Newgarden then won the race at Iowa Speedway after Pagenaud started from the pole position.
Qualifying for the race at Pocono Raceway was rained out, so Newgarden started from the pole position as a result of the fact that he entered the race as the leader of the championship standings. Team Penske’s Will Power ended up winning this rain-shortened race.
So far this season, seven different drivers representing five different teams have been victorious. Team Penske are the one team that have had multiple winners. Their three drivers have combined to win eight races so far in 2019.
Two other drivers, Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, have won multiple races this season, as both have won twice. Sato and Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta have also been victorious.
Meanwhile, seven different drivers representing five different teams, the same five teams, have taken at least one pole position so far this season. Pagenaud and Power co-lead the series with three pole positions each. Rossi, Sato and Newgarden have each taken two (including Newgarden’s rain-induced pole at Pocono) while Herta and Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist have each taken one.
Who will qualify where throughout the field for this Saturday night’s 248-lap race around the four-turn, 1.25-mile (2.012-kilometer) World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway? Most importantly, who will take the pole position?
