Lewis Hamilton has won both of the last two Formula 1 races at Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Will he make it three in a row this weekend?

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton has won both of the last two Formula 1 races at Autodromo Nazionale Monza, meaning that he is set to go for his third consecutive victory at the track in this Sunday’s race, the Italian Grand Prix.

The last race at the 11-turn, 3.600-mile (5.793-kilometer) Autodromo Nazionale Monza road course in Monza, Italy that was won by a driver other than Hamilton was held in September of 2016. This race was won by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg. Hamilton, meanwhile, finished it in second place.

Hamilton also won the races at Autodromo Nazionale Monza in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, meaning that he has earned victories in four of the last five races at the track and it set to go for his fifth victory in the last six races there in this Sunday’s race.

In the 2017 Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton started from the pole position and led all but two of the race’s 53 laps, as teammate Valtteri Bottas took advantage of the fact that Hamilton made his pit stop before he did. Hamilton went on to win the race by 4.471 seconds over Bottas in second place. The race featured two lead changes.

In the 2018 Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton started in third place behind Scuderia Ferrari teammates Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel in first and second, respectively. Vettel spun out on the first lap of the 53-lap race before Hamilton ended up executing his tire strategy more effectively than Raikkonen and earning the victory.

The race featured four lead changes. Raikkonen led 28 laps of the race while Hamilton led 18, but Hamilton won it by 8.705 seconds over Raikkonen in second. Bottas was the only other driver who led any laps, and he did so primarily to hold up Raikkonen and thus help Hamilton. He led seven laps.

Will Hamilton earn his third consecutive victory at Autodromo Nazionale Monza in this Sunday’s race, or will a driver other than Hamilton win at the track for the first time since Rosberg did so in September of 2016?

Heading into the 2018 Italian Grand Prix, there were many people who believed that the championship was slipping away from Hamilton and that this race would be the one in which Vettel established himself as the late-season favorite.

Hamilton proceeded to win it, so betting against the driver who has won this race in both of the last two and four of the last five seasons and who has done so in dominant fashion on multiple occasions and who has done so even when many people doubted him probably isn’t the best decision, even given Ferrari’s momentum following Charles Leclerc’s maiden Formula 1 victory in this past Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

Hamilton also hasn’t finished an Italian Grand Prix in lower than second place since the V6 turbo hybrid era began in the 2014 season.
