IndyCar: Third Rahal Letterman Lanigan car for 2020 now ’50-50′
By Asher Fair
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing fielding three full-time cars in the 2020 IndyCar season is looking less likely than it did last month.
Last month, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing revealed that they were “close” to getting the funding together to field three full-time entries in the 2020 IndyCar season.
The team have fielded two full-time entries in both of the last two seasons after four consecutive seasons of fielding only one. They last fielded three in the 2006 season.
However, according to team co-owner Bobby Rahal, the possibility of the team fielding three cars on a full-time basis next season is looking less likely than it was, dropping from about 65% to 50%.
Here is what Rahal had to say about the matter, according to Motorsport.
"“We’re about halfway there, and we’re still working on it but some of the things that we thought looked good didn’t turn out that way. We’ve got some money, we’ve found some resource but as we’ve always said, if we can’t do it correctly we’re not going to do it. We’ll just work harder to do it correctly. So I think it’s 50-50 now but it’s only September, there’s still time. We’ll see what happens.“We’ve been looking at both rookies and experienced drivers. Rookie-wise, maybe not so much Indy Lights, but we’re also looking outside our borders. But we’re not close to making an announcement yet. As far as I’m concerned, worst case scenario is to keep building as a two-car team and we’re fine with that. We’re confident that Takuma is set to come back, and Graham’s sponsors are set for several years to come. Best case, we’ll be at three full-time.”"

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing were aiming to field three cars on a full-time basis this season as well, but they ultimately did not end up doing so. They did field a third car in the Indianapolis 500 for Jordan King, however.
The team’s current two drivers are Graham Rahal, Bobby’s son, and Takuma Sato. Rahal signed a five-year contract extension in June of 2018 to stay with the team through at least the 2023 season while Sato is expected to return next year as well following what has been a career year for him in his 10th season of IndyCar competition.
Rahal is set to enter the season finale, the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday, September 22 in ninth place in the championship standings, with Sato three spots ahead of him in sixth with two victories this year. Rahal is seeking his first victory since June of 2017.
Will Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing field three cars for the first time in 14 years for the 2020 IndyCar season, or will those plans ultimately fall through once again and leave them with the same driver lineup for the third consecutive season?
