Scott Dixon secured the 2019 IndyCar road and street course championship with his third place finish in the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon entered the 2019 IndyCar season finale as a longshot to win the championship, and to the surprise of maybe a handful of people, he didn’t become a six-time champion in it.

But he also entered this race, the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca sitting atop the road and street course championship standings.

A total of six drivers entered this 90-lap race around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile (3.602-kilometer) WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca natural terrain road course in Monterey, California still mathematically eligible to win this year’s unofficial road and street course championship.

Dixon entered the race with 375 points in road and street course races. He sat three points ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in second place in the road and street course championship standings, 12 points ahead of Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden in third, 66 points ahead of Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud in fourth, 69 points ahead of Team Penske’s Will Power in fifth and 83 points ahead of rookie teammate Felix Rosenqvist in sixth.

Dixon finished this race in third place, meaning that the only way by which he could have lost the road and street course championship was if Rossi finished in the top two or if Newgarden won.

Rossi did not finish in the top two and Newgarden did not win, so Dixon was crowned the 2019 road and street course champion.

Power led these six contenders by finishing in second place in his #12 Chevrolet. Pagenaud finished in fourth in his #22 Chevrolet ahead of Rosenqvist in fifth in his #10 Honda, Rossi in sixth in his #27 Honda and Newgarden in eighth in his #2 Chevrolet.

Dixon finished the season with two victories in the 12 road or street course races, as he won the second race on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan before winning the race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He recorded eight podium finishes and nine top five finishes in these 12 races. His average finish in them was an impressive 6.00.
