NASCAR: Austin Dillon responds to Alex Bowman with comically absurd remark
By Asher Fair
Austin Dillon responded to the “silver spoon” remark made by fellow NASCAR Cup Series driver Alex Bowman with a remark so absurd it’s almost comical.
During this past Saturday night’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Richmond Raceway, Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman was none too pleased with Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon.
After Bowman’s #88 Chevrolet got into the side of Dillon’s #3 Chevrolet entering turn one of the four-turn, 0.75-mile (1.207-kilometer) Richmond Raceway oval in Richmond, Virginia late in the 400-lap Federated Auto Parts 400, Dillon was instructed to “hit him back”.
Between turns three and four, he did just that, prompting an angry response from Bowman over the radio.
“I will shove that silver spoon he’s been fed on his whole life up his ass,” stated an angry Bowman, in reference to the fact that Dillon has competed in NASCAR on a full-time basis for 10 seasons but has only ever driven for his grandfather’s team.
Bowman stood by his claims ahead of this Sunday afternoon’s round of 16 finale at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval, the Bank of America Roval 400, stating “I said what I said.”

He even went on to take another dig at Dillon.
“Not immediately worried about it. Typically don’t see him at these places anyway,” remarked Bowman.
Dillon’s response, however, takes the cake, not because he owned Bowman or anything like that, but because of how terribly absurd it was to the point where it was comical.
“Well, if he’s that good, he’ll catch me at some point,” said Dillon.
Dillon currently sits in 22nd place in the championship standings, out of the playoffs after a 23rd place finish in the standings in the regular season, a 26-race regular season that did not include a top five finish for him.
Bowman, meanwhile, qualified for the playoffs after securing the first victory of his career at Chicagoland Speedway, and he currently sits two points below the round of 12 cut line.
Bowman would be the first NASCAR driver ever to catch someone in 22nd place…from 13th.
To add on to that, Bowman went on to qualify on the front row for the Bank of America Roval 400 in second place while Dillon qualified in 30th.
That said, Bowman is set to start the race from the rear in a backup car after crashing in practice, but still — his speed was 28 positions better than Dillon’s. It’s just a shame we won’t get to see Bowman “catch” Dillon in 30th place from second.
Dillon did, however, go on to say that he is ready to move on from the incident.
“I feel like I handled the business during the race and that’s all it was. Passed that. We raced each other the whole rest of the race. There was no bumping, no nothing. I think we’re pretty much square.”
Surely Bowman is as well, considering the fact that he is the one who is actually driving for something at this point in the season.
Will the Bank of America Roval 400 result in any more drama between Alex Bowman and Austin Dillon? Even with Bowman starting from the rear, will be able to finish ahead of Dillon? NBC is set to broadcast this race, the round of 16 finale of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, from the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET this afternoon.
