Formula 1: Name change approved for Toro Rosso for 2020
By Asher Fair
Scuderia Toro Rosso’s name change has been approved for the 2020 Formula 1 season, making their official name Scuderia Alpha Tauri.
A few weeks ago, there were rumors that a Formula 1 team were eyeing a name change ahead of the 2020 season, which would mark the second consecutive season for which a team changed their name.
After going from Sauber to Alfa Romeo Sauber ahead of the 2018 season, the team officially changed their name to Alfa Romeo Racing ahead of the 2019 season.
With that in mind, the newest name change that is set to take place could make things even more confusing.

Scuderia Toro Rosso are set to change their name to Scuderia Alpha Tauri ahead of the 2020 season.
Toro Rosso are effectively the junior team of the Red Bull Racing organization, and translated from Italian to English, Toro Rosso literally means Red Bull. It has been their name since Red Bull bought the team, which were formerly known as Minardi, ahead of the 2006 season.
Formula 1 had already given permission for the Faenza-based team to execute this name change, but when this news was reported, this provisional change still needed the approval of the Formula 1 Commission via an “e-vote”.
According to Motorsport, a Formula 1 Commission e-vote took place following the Russian Grand Prix on Thursday, October 3, and this name change was approved, despite the fact that it means that there is now an “Alfa” team and an “Alpha” team on the grid.
AlphaTauri, which is based on Salzburg, Austria, is a fashion brand run by Red Bull that serves as a brand extension of the energy drink company into the fashion industry. The name AlphaTauri is derived from the giant red star of the Taurus constellation called Alpha Tauri, and it is in place as a way to pay tribute to Red Bull. In fact, the brand’s logo looks very much like Red Bull’s logo as well.
Scuderia Alpha Tauri have not yet confirmed their driver lineup for the 2020 Formula 1 season, but all signs point to both Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly returning to the team next year.
Red Bull Racing team manager Helmut Marko already confirmed that Kvyat is set to return to the team, and a public confirmation is expected in the near future, while Gasly has done well since being demoted back to the team from Red Bull Racing five races ago.
Rookie Alexander Albon, who replaced Gasly at the Milton Keynes-based team after the season’s first 12 races amid Gasly’s struggles, has done a solid job since replacing him as well, giving the organization no real reason to shake things up ahead of next year.
