Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for the 21st and final race on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule at Yas Marina Circuit, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton took his fifth pole position of the 2019 Formula 1 season and his first in more than four months for the season finale at Yas Marina Circuit, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s most recent pole position prior to the season’s 21st and final race came at the Hockenheimring for the German Grand Prix, the 11th race of the season. His fifth pole position is his 88th career pole position as he continues to extend the all-time record, which is now 20 poles clear of Michael Schumacher’s second place mark of 68.

Hamilton took the pole position for this 55-lap race around the 21-turn, 3.451-mile (5.554-kilometer) Yas Marina Circuit road course on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by recording a top lap time of 94.779 seconds (131.080 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for this race.

For the sixth time in the last six seasons, Mercedes swept the top two in qualifying for this race, as Valtteri Bottas qualified in second place.

However, Bottas is set to start the race at the back of the grid, as Mercedes were forced to replace power unit elements on his W10 after he was forced to retire from the Brazilian Grand Prix at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace two weeks ago. As a result, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen is set to start alongside Hamilton on the front row in second place.

Scuderia Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel qualified in fourth and fifth place and are set to start in third and fourth, respectively, ahead of Red Bull Racing rookie Alexander Albon in fifth.

The other four drivers who advanced to the third and final round of qualifying for this race were McLaren rookie Lando Norris, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg. They qualified in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

SportPesa Racing Point’s Sergio Perez, Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly, Racing Point’s Lance Stroll, Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen were eliminated following the second round of qualifying for the race after qualifying in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Haas’ Romain Grosjean, Alfa Romeo Racing teammates Antonio Giovinazzi, a rookie, and Kimi Raikkonen and ROKiT Williams Racing teammates George Russell, a rookie, and Robert Kubica were eliminated following the first round of qualifying for the race after qualifying in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.
