Indy 500: Updated look at the 2020 entry list
By Asher Fair
Following Andretti Autosport’s confirmation of James Hinchcliffe for the 104th running of the Indy 500, what does the entry list look like for this race?
Andretti Autosport and James Hinchcliffe are set to reunite for at least three races throughout the 2020 IndyCar season, and one of those three races is the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 24.
Hinchcliffe previously competed for Andretti Autosport as a full-time driver from 2012 to 2014 before making the move to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, where he stayed until he was cut by the team following the 2019 season.
Heading into 2020, he did not have any kind of ride lined up until he secured sponsorship from Genesys for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course race as well as the Indy 500.

After several weeks of speculation, fueled in large part by the fact that the 33-year-old Canadian released two videos on Twitter subtly hinting at a pending announcement, this ride behind the wheel of the #29 Honda was confirmed.
He is also set to compete in the race at Texas Motor Speedway, and more races could potentially be added to his schedule.
But for the sake of this article, let’s focus on the Indy 500 as a whole. Where does Hinchcliffe’s confirmation leave the entry list for this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) superspeedway oval in Speedway, Indiana with just under three months remaining before it takes place?
Here is a look at the entry list for this race as of now.

If you add all of this up, you get 28 confirmed drivers with three additional confirmed entries (31 total confirmed entries) and six more that look really solid heading into 2020, bringing the total to 37 with still nearly three months to go until the actual race.
With that being said, there are questions about James Davison’s entry after the Jonathan Byrd’s Racing/Hayward Motorsports Daytona 500 entry fell through, but Davison has actually competed in the Indy 500 five times before, including in each of the last three years.
Jonathan Byrd’s Racing have been a part of his most recent two entries as well, so it’s not like they are entering uncharted territory like they would have been in NASCAR.
Suffice it to say that there should be a significant amount of bumping once again in 2020.
How many entries will end up on the entry list for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500, and who will be bumped from the field? This race is the sixth of 17 races on the 2020 IndyCar schedule, and it is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 24. NBC is set to broadcast the race live from Indianapolis Motor Speedway beginning at 11:00 a.m. ET.
