Chase Elliott took his first pole position of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season for the FanShield 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott became the fourth different driver to take a pole position through the first four races of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, taking the top spot for the FanShield 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

Elliott took the pole position for this 312-lap race around the four-turn, 1.022-mile (1.645-kilometer) oval in Avondale, Arizona by recording a top lap time of 26.065 seconds (138.116 miles per hour) in his #9 Chevrolet in the single-car qualifying session. This pole position is the ninth of his Cup Series career.

Just as one Chevrolet driver, one Ford driver and one Toyota driver had taken one pole position so far this season entering the weekend and just as one Chevrolet driver, one Ford driver and one Toyota driver have won a race this season, one Chevrolet driver, one Ford driver and one Toyota driver qualified in the top three.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick was on the provisional pole before Elliott knocked him off. He is set to start in second place in his #4 Ford. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin was the highest qualifying Toyota driver. He qualified in third in his #11 Toyota.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson qualified in fourth place in his #42 Chevrolet and avoided a fifth place tie between two Ford drivers: Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, who is set to start in fifth in his #12 Ford, and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola, who is set to start in sixth in his #10 Ford. Blaney and Almirola both qualified on the third row with lap times of 26.190 seconds (137.457 miles per hour).

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch and Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman are set to share the fourth row in seventh and eighth place in their #1 Chevrolet and #88 Chevrolet, respectively.

Wood Brothers Racing’s Matt DiBenedetto qualified in ninth place in his #21 Ford. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch was the only other Toyota driver who qualified in the top 10. He qualified in 10th in his #18 Toyota. Teammate Martin Truex Jr., who qualified in 12th in his #19 Toyota, is set to drop to the rear on the pace laps after an engine change.
