IndyCar: Indianapolis qualifying results – Will Power takes pole
By Asher Fair
Will Power took the pole position for the 2020 IndyCar season’s second race, the GMR Grand Prix, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
The second of 14 races on the 2020 IndyCar schedule is the first of two scheduled races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. This race, the GMR Grand Prix, is the first race in nearly a full month since the season got underway at Texas Motor Speedway in early June.
Team Penske’s Will Power took the pole position for this race for the fourth time in seven years, doing so with a top lap time of 70.1779 seconds (125.116 miles per hour) in his #12 Chevrolet around the 13-turn, 2.439-mile (3.925-kilometer) road course in Speedway, Indiana during the Firestone Fast Six qualifying session.
Every time he has started this race from the pole position before, he has gone on to win, doing so in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Power, one of only two drivers to win this race in its first six years, knocked Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey off of the provisional pole position on his final lap. Harvey is set to start in a career-high second place in his #60 Honda after finishing in a career-high third in this race last year.
Honda drivers Colton Herta and Graham Rahal of Andretti Harding Steinbrenner Autosport and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing are set to share the second row in third and fourth place in their #88 Honda and #15 Honda, respectively.
The other two drivers who advanced to the Firestone Fast Six were Arrow McLaren SP rookie Oliver Askew and Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden. Askew qualified in fifth place and Newgarden is set to start in sixth after making a mistake that prevented him from completing a lap in this third and final round of qualifying.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, Ed Carpenter Racing’s Conor Daly, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist, who took the pole position for this race last year, and Carlin’s Max Chilton missed out on the Firestone Fast Six but are set to round out the top 10 on the starting grid after qualifying in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #9 Honda, #20 Chevrolet, #10 Honda and #59 Chevrolet, respectively.
The two drivers who advanced to the second round of qualifying but failed to qualify in the top 10 were Andretti Autosport teammates Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay. They qualified on the sixth row in 11th and 12th place in their #27 Honda and #28 Honda, respectively.
The only driver aside of Power who has won this race is Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud. Pagenaud, who won it last year, had a disappointing qualifying session and qualified in 20th place in his #22 Chevrolet.
