IndyCar: Iowa Race 1 starting lineup – Conor Daly takes pole
By Asher Fair
Conor Daly took the first pole position of his IndyCar career for the first race of the Iowa IndyCar 250s doubleheader at Iowa Speedway.
For the first time in his IndyCar career, Conor Daly is set to start a race from the pole position, as he earned Carlin their first ever pole position for the first race of the Iowa IndyCar 250s doubleheader at Iowa Speedway.
In this unique qualifying format, each driver completed two laps around the four-turn, 0.894-mile (1.439-kilometer) oval in Newton, Iowa, and the first lap counted for the starting lineup of the first race while the second lap counted for the starting lineup of the second race.
Daly’s first lap in his #59 Chevrolet topped the speed chart at 175.188 miles per hour (18.6442 seconds).

He is set to start alongside Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden in second place in his #1 Chevrolet, as Newgarden came up just shy of the pole position with a lap speed of 175.107 miles per hour (18.3796 seconds).
Team Penske’s Will Power is set to start in third place in his #12 Chevrolet. The other Team Penske driver, Simon Pagenaud, was unable to qualify due to a fuel pressure issue, so he is set to start at the rear of the field in 23rd in his #22 Chevrolet — for both races.
Andretti Harding Steinbrenner Autosport’s Colton Herta was the highest qualifying Honda driver for the first race. He is set to start in fourth place in his #88 Honda.
Three more Honda drivers are set to line up right behind Herta, with Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi set to start in fifth place in his #27 Honda alongside Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato in sixth in his #30 Honda and ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist in seventh in his #10 Honda.
Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward, Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Marcus Ericsson are set to round out the top 10 in eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #5 Chevrolet, #60 Honda and #8 Honda, respectively.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, who leads the championship standings through four races of the 14-race 2020 season, had an abysmal qualifying run and is set to start in 17th place in his #9 Honda.
