Follow along with our live qualifying updates of the Fast Nine Shootout to see who will take the pole position for the 104th running of the Indy 500.
Following the first of two days of Crown Royal Armed Forces Qualifying for the 104th running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, nine IndyCar drivers are slated to battle it out for the pole position and set the front three rows for this year’s edition of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” in the Fast Nine Shootout.
Those nine drivers are Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi, James Hinchcliffe, Scott Dixon, Rinus VeeKay, Alex Palou, Graham Rahal and Takuma Sato. Among those nine drivers, only Hinchcliffe and Dixon are former Indy 500 polesitters.
Andretti led these nine drivers in yesterday’s qualifying session by recording a four-lap average speed of 231.351 miles per hour around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Brickyard oval in Speedway, Indiana behind the wheel of his #98 Andretti Herta Autosport Honda.

Will he be able to back it up with a run at the pole position this afternoon? Each driver is again slated to make a four-lap qualifying run this afternoon, but the limit is one run per driver. These nine drivers were separated by just 0.559 miles per hour in yesterday’s qualifying session. Over a four-lap run, that translates to just 0.377 seconds.
Last year, it was Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud who took the pole position for this race behind the wheel of his #22 Chevrolet after finishing the opening day of qualifying in third place, and he went on to win it the following week to become the first polesitter to win since Helio Castroneves did so driving for the same team back in 2009.
He will not be in this year’s Fast Nine Shootout after qualifying in 25th place yesterday. In fact, there are no Team Penske drivers in the Fast Nine Shootout for the first time since 2002.
Follow along with our live qualifying updates of the Fast Nine Shootout to see who will start where within the front three rows for next Sunday’s 104th running of the Indy 500.
