Lewis Hamilton led every lap of the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to secure his 88th career Formula 1 victory.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton continued the pace that should allow him to become the all-time winningest driver in Formula 1 history later this year by dominating the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Hamilton started 66-lap race around the 16-turn, 2.892-mile (4.654-kilometer) road course in Montmelo, Catalonia, Spain from the pole position, and he led every lap en route to a 24.117-second victory over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

This win was Hamilton’s fourth through the first six races of the 2020 season and in the last five races, and it was the 88th of his Formula 1 career, putting him just three wins shy of Michael Schumacher’s record of 91. Additionally, it was his 156th podium finish, breaking Schumacher’s record of 155.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, who started on the front row alongside Hamilton but had a very poor start, finished in third place and scored a bonus point for recording the race’s fastest lap.

Racing Point teammates Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Stroll finished behind Perez, but Perez was issued a five-second time penalty for ignoring blue flags. This race was Perez’s first after missing the two races at Silverstone Circuit due to testing positive for COVID-19 and being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg.

The only driver who failed to finish the race was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, whose car had an electrical issue. Of the 19 drivers who finished the race, only the top three finished on the lead lap. A mere three drivers hadn’t finished on the lead lap in a race since the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
