Formula 1: Spa starting lineup – Lewis Hamilton takes pole

Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for the seventh race of the 2020 Formula 1 season, the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

Following a weekend off, Formula 1 is set to start the third three-week stint of races of the 2020 season at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps with the Belgian Grand Prix, the seventh race of the new-look 17-race 2020 schedule.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for this race, marking his series-high fifth pole position of the season and extending his all-time record to 93 poles. Mercedes are seven for seven in terms of pole positions this year.

Hamilton took the pole position for this 44-lap race around the 19-turn, 4.352-mile (7.004-kilometer) road course in Stavelot, Belgium by recording a top lap time of 101.252 seconds (154.735 miles per hour), a new track record, in the third and final round of qualifying for the race.

Just five of the sport’s 10 teams advanced to the third and final round of qualifying, as all five of these teams placed both of their drivers in the top 10.

Mercedes locked out the front row for the sixth time this season and the fifth race in a row, as Valtteri Bottas qualified in second place and is set to start alongside Hamilton on the front row. But Bottas came nowhere Hamilton’s pace in qualifying, as his top lap time was 0.511 seconds (0.777 miles per hour) shy of Hamilton’s at 101.763 seconds (153.958 miles per hour).

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen qualified in third place and is set to start alongside Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo on the second row in fourth. The third row is also set to be occupied by one Red Bull driver and one Renault driver, with Alexander Albon in fifth and Esteban Ocon in sixth.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., Racing Point teammates Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll and McLaren’s Lando Norris rounded out the top 10 by qualifying in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Eliminated after the second round of qualifying were AlphaTauri teammates Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly, Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel and Williams’ George Russell. They qualified in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Eliminated after the first round of qualifying were Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen, Haas’ Romain Grosjean, Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi, Williams rookie Nicholas Latifi and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen. They qualified in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.

Russell is now an impressive 28 for 28 in in terms of outqualifying his teammates throughout his career.
