IndyCar: Gateway starting lineup – Will Power takes pole

Will Power took the pole position for the first IndyCar race of this weekend’s doubleheader at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

Team Penske’s Will Power took his second pole position of the 2020 IndyCar season for the first of two races of this weekend’s doubleheader at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

The 2018 winner at the track took the pole position for the first race of the Bommarito Automotive Group Race to MEGA Savings 250s by recording a top lap speed of 182.394 miles per hour (24.6719 seconds) behind the wheel of his #12 Chevrolet on the first lap of his two-lap qualifying run.

Only the first lap of each driver’s two-lap qualifying run counted toward setting the starting lineup for the first race of this doubleheader. The second lap counted toward setting the starting lineup for the second.

Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward qualified in second place behind the wheel of his #5 Chevrolet and is set to start alongside Power on the front row, giving Chevrolet their third front row sweep in the last four races.

Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon and Marcus Ericsson led the way for Honda by qualifying on the second row in third and fourth place behind the wheels of their #9 Honda and #8 Honda, respectively.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato, last year’s winner at the track, qualified in fifth place behind the wheel of his #30 Honda. He is set to start alongside Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, the 2017 winner at the track, in sixth behind the wheel of his #1 Chevrolet.

Honda drivers took the next six positions on the starting grid and thus nine of the 10 spots from third through 12th place. Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey qualified in seventh behind the wheel of his #60 Honda ahead of Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alexander Rossi in eighth and ninth behind the wheels of their #28 Honda and #27 Honda, respectively.

Andretti Harding Steinbrenner Autosport’s Colton Herta qualified in 10th place behind the wheel of his #88 Honda. Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh rookie Alex Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist qualified in 11th and 12th behind the wheels of their #55 Honda and #10 Honda, respectively.
