Josef Newgarden won the second race of the IndyCar doubleheader at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway under caution.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden earned his second victory of the 2020 IndyCar season in the second race of the Bommarito Automotive Group Race to MEGA Savings 250s doubleheader at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

In 11 previous races at the four-turn, 1.25-mile (2.012-kilometer) oval in Madison, Illinois, there had never been a two-time winner at the track. Newgarden became the first, as he also won the race there in 2017 after IndyCar returned to the venue following a 14-year hiatus.

Newgarden, who won the 200-lap race under caution, led an impressive top four Chevrolet sweep, with Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward tying his career-high result of second place behind the wheel of his #5 Chevrolet. O’Ward finished in the top three in both races this weekend.

Team Penske’s Will Power finished in third place behind the wheel of his #12 Chevrolet ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing rookie Rinus VeeKay in a career-high fourth behind the wheel of his #21 Chevrolet. Team Penske have now been responsible for each of Chevrolet’s last 29 wins going back to September of 2016.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, who won the first race of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, led all Honda drivers in fifth place behind the wheel of his #9 Honda. This fifth place finish is tied for Dixon’s second worst result through nine races this year, as he has a massive 96-point lead in the championship standings. Dixon, who has four wins so far this season, and Newgarden are the only two drivers who have multiple wins in 2020.

Andretti Harding Steinbrenner Racing’s Colton Herta finished in sixth place behind the wheel of his #88 Honda ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist in seventh behind the wheel of his #10 Honda and Carlin’s Conor Daly in eighth behind the wheel of his #59 Chevrolet.

The race ran caution-free until there were just four laps remaining when Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato, who led the most laps after starting from the pole position, hit the wall, although the first two laps were technically run under caution because the start was delayed and more pace laps were run than initially planned.

Because there were just over three laps remaining when the #30 Honda slammed the turn two wall, the race ended under yellow despite the fact that the crash was minor and Sato was able to continue running and finish in ninth place after only losing one position due to the contact.

Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Santino Ferrucci rounded out the top 10 in 10th place behind the wheel of his #18 Honda. Four drivers outside of the top 10 finished on the lead lap
