Bubba Wallace 2021 landing spots: Hendrick Motorsports

It does seem as though every driver under the sun has been linked to the #48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to replace retiring seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson after the 2020 season.

However, slowly but surely, drivers have been crossed off of that list. Bubba Wallace’s name remains on it, however, and while that list is still quite lengthy, his name stands out quite a bit more now that has confirmed he won’t return to Richard Petty Motorsports.

Rick Hendrick recently hinted that the team had already made a decision in regard to their fourth driver for the 2021 season, but he noted that he was more focused on the playoffs and did not want to make an announcement about the matter just yet.

Could that driver be Wallace? Wallace notably hadn’t confirmed his departure from Richard Petty Motorsports when Hendrick made that revelation, but we don’t know what kind of talks went on behind the scenes.

While Wallace publicized the fact that he had been offered a contract by Chip Ganassi Racing, that doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t get other offers that he failed to announce publicly.

If his offer from Chip Ganassi Racing still stands and he opts to decline it, it’s hard to see him ending up anywhere other than Hendrick’s team. At one point, he had even reportedly been considered a favorite for this seat.

Given Wallace’s sponsorship situation, this move could allow Ally Financial to move to Alex Bowman’s team or Bowman to move to the #48 team, with Wallace instead driving the #88 Chevrolet.
