NASCAR: Kansas provisional starting lineup – Chase Elliott on pole
By Asher Fair
Chase Elliott is slated to start from the pole position for the opening race of the round of 8 of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs at Kansas Speedway.
Based on the starting lineup formula which has been used since August, Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott is set to start the opening race of the three-race round of 8 of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway, from the pole position behind the wheel of his #9 Chevrolet.
This starting lineup formula, which has been used for nine races since its introduction, is based on three factors: most recent race result (50% weight, with 25% on car and 25% on driver), position in the owner standings (35% weight) and rank of fastest lap in the most recent race (15% weight).
This pole position for this 267-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Kansas City, Kansas is slated to be Elliott’s third in 10 usages of this formula.

Elliott is set to start from the pole position in this race as a result of the fact that he leads two of these three categories. He won the most recent race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval after recording the race’s fastest lap, and his #9 team is set to enter the round of 8 in fourth place in the owner standings.
This race is effectively set to pick off where the race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval left off, as runner-up Joey Logano of Team Penske is set to start alongside Elliott on the front row in second place behind the wheel of his #22 Ford. He ranks in the top five in all three categories.
The only other driver who ranks in the top 10 in all three categories is Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch, who ranks in the top eight in each of them. He is set to start in third place behind the wheel of his #1 Chevrolet alongside Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick in fourth behind the wheel of his #4 Ford.
Harvick leads the one category which Elliott does not, as his #4 team leads the owner standings entering the round of 8 as a result of their series-high 67 playoff points.
