Formula 1: Portimao results, standings – Lewis Hamilton breaks the record
By Asher Fair
Lewis Hamilton has secured the 92nd victory of his Formula 1 career in the Portuguese Grand Prix, breaking Michael Schumacher’s all-time record.
Formula 1 has a new all-time winningest driver following the 2020 season’s 12th race, the Portuguese Grand Prix at Algarve International Circuit, and that driver is six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
The Mercedes driver entered this having just tied seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher atop the all-time wins list with his 91st victory in the most recent race, the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.
Hamilton’s victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix is his eighth of the season, giving him at least eight victories in seven consecutive seasons.

Hamilton did not get off to a great start tin this 66-lap race around the 15-turn, 2.91-mile (4.683-kilometer) road course in Portimao, Algarve, Portugal, as he was passed by both teammate Valtteri Bottas and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. in the first few corners.
In fact, Sainz even went on to take the lead away from Bottas and lead a few laps. But the race slowly came to the Silver Arrows, and after Bottas re-took the lead, Hamilton hunted him down and pulled away, never to be seen again prior to taking the checkered flag.
For the seventh time this season, the podium consisted of Hamilton, Bottas and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, as Bottas finished in second place, 25.592 seconds behind Hamilton, with Verstappen in third. The top four drivers all finished where they started, as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished in fourth.
AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly finished in an impressive fifth place ahead of Sainz in sixth. Racing Point’s Sergio Perez overcame a first-lap spin to finish in seventh ahead of Renault teammates Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo in eighth and ninth, respectively. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top 10 in 10th.
