Formula 1: 15 Michael Schumacher records Lewis Hamilton can still break
By Asher Fair
Lewis Hamilton broke the all-time Formula 1 wins record, which had been held by Michael Schumacher for more than 19 years, with his 92nd career victory. Here are 15 more Schumacher records he can still break before he retires.
In his 262nd career Formula 1 start, six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton broke the all-time wins record that had been held by seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher since 2001.
Hamilton’s victory in this past Sunday’s Portuguese Grand Prix at Algarve International Circuit was the 92nd of his career, and it came just one race after he tied Schumacher on the all-time wins list with his 91st win in the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.
But despite breaking what is arguably the sport’s most significant record — and despite the fact that this record may very well never be broken, with nobody currently even remotely in striking range — Hamilton still has quite a few additional records held by Schumacher which he can break before he retires. The British driver is, after all, still only 35 years old.
Here are 15 of them.
Races with a single constructor
Schumacher competed in 179 races for Ferrari throughout his career. Hamilton sits in second place all-time having competed in 152 races for Mercedes.
Wins with a single constructor
Schumacher earned 72 of his 91 victories competing for Ferrari. Hamilton has earned 71 of his 92 victories competing for Mercedes.

Schumacher won a record 13 races in 2004, a record which Sebastian Vettel tied in 2013. Hamilton has won as many as 11 races in a year, and he has pulled it off three times: in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
Wins in a single grand prix
Schumacher and Hamilton are currently tied atop this list with eight. Schumacher won the French Grand Prix eight times while Hamilton has won the Hungarian Grand Prix eight times. However, Hamilton has more chances to break this record as well. He has seven wins in the Canadian Grand Prix and in the British Grand Prix, and he has six wins in the United States Grand Prix and in the Canadian Grand Prix.
Consecutive seasons with at least one win
Schumacher won at least one race for 15 consecutive seasons from 1992 to 2006. Hamilton’s active streak of 14 began in his rookie season in 2007 and will likely break this record in 2022.
Pole positions for a single grand prix
Schumacher and Hamilton are currently tied atop this list with Ayrton Senna with eight. Schumacher took eight pole positions for the Japanese Grand Prix while Senna took eight pole positions for the San Marino Grand Prix. Hamilton has taken eight pole positions for the Australian Grand Prix, seven for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the British Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix and six for the Chinese Grand Prix, the Canadian Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix.
Fastest laps
Schumacher’s record of 77 fastest laps is still a decent amount higher than Hamilton’s second place mark of 52, but it is not insurmountable.
World championships
Schumacher has won the world champion seven times. Hamilton is slated to tie that mark this year.
Fastest laps in a single season
Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen have both recorded as many as 10 fastest laps in a single season. Hamilton has recorded as many as eight, which he pulled off in 2015.
Podium finishes in a single season
Schumacher went a perfect 17 for 17 in 2002, so this is a record that shouldn’t technically ever be broken. But with more than 17 races in a season, Hamilton has recorded 17 podium finishes on four occasions (2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019), and he could very well break this record in the near future.
Most podium finishes with a single constructor
Schumacher secured 116 of his 155 podium finishes driving for Ferrari while Hamilton has secured 112 of his record 161 driving for Mercedes.
Consecutive podium finishes
From the 2001 United States Grand Prix to the 2002 Japanese Grand Prix, Schumacher recorded 19 straight podium finishes. Hamilton’s personal best is currently 16 from the 2014 Italian Grand Prix to the 2015 British Grand Prix.
Laps led
Schumacher led 5,111 of the 16,824 laps he contested throughout his 19-year career. Hamilton has led 4,976 of the 14,933 laps he has contested over his 14-year career.
Pole position, win and fastest lap in a single race
Schumacher has pulled off this feat 22 times while Hamilton sits four shy at 18.
Consecutive world championships
In addition to his world championship record, Schumacher’s consecutive championship record of five (2000 to 2004) could be challenged by Hamilton, who is currently on a three-year streak from 2017 and is slated to win a fourth in a row in 2020.
