NASCAR has again been forced to alter the weekend schedule at Martinsville Speedway as a result of rain, pushing the Cup Series race back as well.

Both the NASCAR Xfinity Series race and the Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway got underway on their scheduled dates this weekend, with the former getting underway on Friday night, albeit after a slight rain delay, and the latter getting underway on Saturday night after a slight rain delay of its own.

But neither one of those two races around the four-turn, 0.526-mile (0.847-kilometer) oval in Ridgeway, Virginia ended up finishing.

Just 91 of the 250 scheduled laps of the Xfinity Series race, the Cook Out 250, were contested by the time the red flag flew and the race was halted due to rain. It was postponed until Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday night, the story was much the same.

Just 42 of the 500 scheduled laps of the Cup Series race, the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500, were contested by the time the red flag flew and the race was halted due to rain.

The race was stopped when the rains came just moments after the first caution flag flew due to an incident between Rick Ware Racing teammates Cody Ware and James Davison, prompting discussions about Darrell Waltrip’s famous “vortex theory”. Despite track-drying efforts, this race has also been postponed until Sunday afternoon.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin took the lead from Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who started the race from the pole position, on the fourth lap, and he was still the race leader ahead of Logano in second place when the red flag flew.
