The stage is set for the fourth race on the 2021 Formula 1 calendar following Saturday’s qualifying session at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Qualifying for the 2021 Formula 1 season’s fourth race, the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, is in the books.

It is Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton who has become the first driver to take two pole positions this year following yet another intense session.

Hamilton took the pole position for this 66-lap race around the 16-turn, 2.892-mile (4.654-kilometer) road course in Montmelo, Catalonia, Spain by recording a top lap time of 76.741 seconds (135.667 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying.

The seven-time world champion beat out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.036 seconds to take what is his 100th career pole position.

This pole position is the 97-time race winner’s sixth in the last eight races at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and it is his fifth in the last six. It also marks his ninth straight front row start for the race as he pursues his sixth career victory in it. He has won the event on four straight occasions going back to 2017.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas qualified in third place, just 0.096 seconds behind Verstappen, giving the grid a familiar top three. Interestingly, none of the top three set their fastest lap on their final lap.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is set to start alongside Bottas after qualifying in fourth place, though he was well off the pace of the top three, as expected.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon qualified in an impressive fifth place and is set to start alongside Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. in sixth. McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo qualified in seventh and is set to start alongside Red Bull’s Sergio Perez in a disappointing eighth after Perez spun in the third and final round of qualifying.

McLaren’s Lando Norris and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso were the slowest two drivers among the 10 who advanced to the third and final round, and they are set to start in ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Only five teams made it into the top 10, each with both of their drivers. The five teams that missed out were Aston Martin, AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo, Williams and Haas.

Williams’ George Russell is now 41-0 in Williams qualifying battles, and Haas rookie Mick Schumacher is 4-0, again blowing away rookie teammate Nikita Mazepin.
