Formula 1: 2021 Baku qualifying – Full starting lineup
By Asher Fair
The starting lineup for the sixth race of the 2021 Formula 1 season is set following Saturday’s qualifying session at Baku City Circuit.
Following a week off after the Monaco Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco, Formula 1 is back in action this weekend with the 23-race 2021 season’s sixth race, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku City Circuit.
Baku City Circuit saw quite an anticlimactic qualifying session set the 20-car starting grid for Sunday’s race, as a red flag brought it to an early end.
For the second consecutive race, both times partially due to a late red flag, it was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who took the pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton also qualified on the front row.

Leclerc took the pole position for this 51-lap race around the 20-turn, 3.73-mile (6.003-kilometer) Baku City Circuit temporary street circuit in Azadliq Square, Baku, Azerbaijan by recording a top lap time of 101.218 seconds (132.664 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for the race.
This lap time was 0.232 seconds (0.303 miles per hour) quicker than that of Hamilton, whose top lap time was 101.450 seconds (132.361 miles per hour).
Set to start behind Leclerc and Hamilton in the second row of the grid are Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in third place and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly in a career-high fourth, meaning that four teams are represented inside the top four.
The red flag which ended the third and final round of qualifying was the fourth overall red flag of the session, and it came out due to an incident involving Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and AlphaTauri rookie Yuki Tsunoda. Their qualifying efforts landed them in fifth and eighth place, respectively, on the provisional starting grid.
McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi also caused red flags throughout the qualifying session, with Ricciardo doing so in the second round and Stroll and Giovinazzi doing so in the first round. These three drivers are slated to start in 13th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.
