Kaulig Racing are set to join the NASCAR Cup Series on a full-time basis for the 2022 season, and with not just one but two cars.

Earlier in the year, Kaulig Racing announced their plans to make the move to the NASCAR Cup Series on a full-time basis for the 2022 season.

The Matt Kaulig-owned team have competed full-time in the Xfinity Series since the 2016 season, and they made their Cup Series debut in last year’s Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway with Justin Haley behind the wheel of the #16 Chevrolet.

They upped their Cup Series effort for the 2021 season, entering not just the Daytona 500 but the the other superspeedway races and the road course races as well.

Now they have confirmed a full-time effort for the 2022 season, and with two cars.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

Justin Haley, who competes for the team on a full-time basis in the Xfinity Series, is set to drive one of those two cars on a full-time basis next year, and A.J. Allmendinger, who also competes for the team on a full-time basis at NASCAR’s second highest level, is the first driver to be announced for a part-time effort in the second car.

But most notably, perhaps even more notable than the driver confirmations in this day and age, they announced that they have purchased two charters for their two cars.

This is an impressive accomplishment, considering the fact that there are only 36 charters as well as the fact that the market prices for charters — among the very limited number that are actually available for purchase — have skyrocketed in recent years.

The competition to purchase charters is intense, and with so many teams looking to either enter the Cup Series or expand their current Cup Series efforts in 2022 with the Next Gen car set to be launched, pulling off the purchase of not one but two charters is quite the feat.

So how did Kaulig Racing manage to do it?

They purchased two of Spire Motorsports’ charters, including the one that is currently being used by the Justin Marks and Pitbull-owned Trackhouse Racing Team.

Spire Motorsports have three charters. They use one to run the #7 Chevrolet full-time for Corey LaJoie, and they use another to run the #77 Chevrolet full-time for multiple drivers. Interestingly, Haley is the primary driver of that car this year, and he is the primary beneficiary of this transaction for next year.

The team’s third charter was leased to Trackhouse Racing Team ahead of their first season in the series this year. That charter is used to the run the #99 Chevrolet full-time for Daniel Suarez.

Using the one charter they did not sell, Spire Motorsports plan to continue to run the #7 Chevrolet for LaJoie next year.

Here is what Spire Motorsports had to say about the matter in a statement.

"“Spire Motorsports will sell two of its three charters to Kaulig Racing. We will continue to field the No. 7 with Corey LaJoie as a chartered entry in 2022. We remain committed to NASCAR and the Cup Series and we will continue to look for opportunities to grow and compete in the future.”"

The 2022 season is scheduled to get underway with the 64th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, February 20. In the meantime, Kaulig Racing will be looking to win their first Xfinity Series championship. Their three drivers, Haley, Allmendinger and Jeb Burton, have combined for three wins so far this season, and they all sit in the top seven in the point standings.
