NASCAR: It’s been more than a month since Kyle Larson didn’t win

Five weekends ago was the last time a NASCAR Cup Series race was contested and Kyle Larson was not the winner. There are two opportunities to change that this weekend.

Sunday, May 23, 2021 was now more than a month ago. But to this day, it is the most recent day on which a NASCAR Cup Series race was contested but not won by Kyle Larson.

The driver of the #5 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports finished behind teammate Chase Elliott in the inaugural race at Circuit of the Americas that afternoon, but he hasn’t lost since then.

There have been four races contested since then, including three points-paying events. Larson has won them all.

He won at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 30, Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, June 6 and Nashville Superspeedway on Sunday, June 20. He also won the All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 13.

As far as his three straight points-paying victories, which have taken him to a series-high four victories so far this year (he also won at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, March 7) and to within 10 points of points leader Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing, are concerned, all have come in dominant fashion.

He led 327 of the 400 laps around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway oval in Concord, North Carolina before leading 57 of the 90 laps around the 12-turn, 2.52-mile (4.056-kilometer) Sonoma Raceway natural terrain road course in Sonoma, California and 264 of the 300 laps around the four-turn, 1.333-mile (2.145-kilometer) Nashville Superspeedway oval in Lebanon, Tennessee.

That’s good for 648 out of 790 laps led.

Prior to his winning streak, Larson had recorded three consecutive second place finishes at Darlington Raceway on Sunday, May 9, Dover International Speedway on Sunday, May 16 and Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, May 23. He hasn’t finished outside of the top two since he finished in 19th at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, May 2.

Will his winning streak end this weekend? There are two opportunities for the rest of the field to bring it to an end at Pocono Raceway, one this afternoon and one tomorrow afternoon.

This afternoon’s race, the Pocono Organics CBD 325, is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network from the three-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) triangle in Long Pond, Pennsylvania beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET. Tomorrow afternoon’s race, the Explore the Pocono Mountains 350, is set to be broadcast live on the same network beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. Larson has not won at the Tricky Triangle in 12 career starts.
