Lewis Hamilton has a chance to break a major all-time Formula 1 record in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.

Following a much needed weekend away from Formula 1 racing after the controversial British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit, the Hungaroring is scheduled to host the 11th race on the 23-race 2021 schedule this Sunday, August 1.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is set to enter this Sunday’s 70-lap Hungarian Grand Prix around the 14-turn, 2.722-mile (4.381-kilometer) road course in Mogyoród, Hungary in second place in the driver standings.

But he only trails Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by eight points after a collision between the pair at Silverstone Circuit forced Verstappen to retire from the race.

Hamilton, meanwhile, overcame the 10-second penalty he was issued for causing the collision and went on to win the race for a record eighth time.

But this is a record that Hamilton could very well break in the near future — this weekend, perhaps.

This victory marked just the third time in Formula 1 history that a driver had won the same race on eight occasions, as the seven-time world champion also won it in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He is responsible for one of the other two instances as well, and because of it, he is in position to break a major all-time record this Sunday.

The Hungarian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place at the Hungaroring on Sunday, August 1, and Hamilton will be looking to win the race for the fourth straight year, a victory which would make him the first ever nine-time winner of a single event. He also won the race in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016.

Fellow seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher is the only other driver who currently shares the record with Hamilton in this category. Schumacher is an eight-time winner of the French Grand Prix at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, having won it in 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006.

WynnBET lists Hamilton as the second favorite (+150) behind Verstappen (-115) to win this weekend’s race.
