IndyCar: 2021 Gateway qualifying – Live updates
By Asher Fair
Follow along with our live qualifying updates for the fourth and final oval race of the 2021 IndyCar season at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
IndyCar is set for the last of four oval races on the schedule this weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, the Bommarito Automotive Group 500.
The first two oval races took place in early May at Texas Motor Speedway, followed by Memorial Day Sunday’s 105th running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
But qualifying for the doubleheader at Texas Motor Speedway was rained out, meaning that the qualifying session for this Saturday night’s race is only the second oval qualifying session of the year.

Unlike for the Indy 500, where the starting lineup is based on average speeds of four-lap runs, with the top nine drivers advancing to the Fast Nine Shootout for another four-lap run and some needing to qualify again with a four-lap run to avoid being bumped, the starting lineup for this weekend’s race is based on two-lap runs.
Last season, the four-turn, 1.25-mile (2.198-kilometer) oval in Madison, Illinois hosted a doubleheader, so each driver’s first lap only counted toward determining the starting lineup for the first race while each driver’s second lap only counted toward determining the starting lineup for the second. With just one 260-lap race at the track this year, the lineup will be determined based on the two-lap average speeds.
Who will qualify where throughout the 24-car field for this Saturday night’s race?
