Formula 1: 2021 Spa qualifying – Full starting lineup, odds
By Asher Fair
Another intense qualifying session set the starting lineup for the first race back from the Formula 1 summer break, the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
After a four-week hiatus, Formula 1 is back this weekend with the 2021 season’s 12th race: the Belgian Grand Prix.
This race is the race that will take the 2021 season past the halfway mark, as the goal is to run a record 22 races this season despite the fact that the remainder of the calendar has been shaken up due to cancellations that have come about due to COVID-19-related restrictions.
The qualifying session for this race took place on Saturday morning, and as we have become accustomed to through the season’s first 11 races, it was an intense one.
Where is the Belgian Grand Prix?
The Belgian Grand Prix takes place at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, a 19-turn, 4.352-mile (7.004-kilometer) natural terrain road course located in Stavelot, Belgium.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took the pole position for this 44-lap race by recording a top lap time of 119.765 seconds (130.816 miles per hour) in the wet third and final round of qualifying for the race.
Following an absolutely shocking run that nearly netted him the pole position, Williams’ George Russell is set to start alongside Verstappen on the front row after recording a top lap time of 120.086 seconds (130.466 miles per hour) in the same round of qualifying.
Championship leader of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes qualified in third place. Teammate Valtteri Bottas qualified in eighth but is set to start in 13th as a result of a five-position grid penalty stemming from the Hungarian Grand Prix. The same penalty was issued to Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, who qualified in 15th but is set to start in 20th.
McLaren’s Lando Norris crashed in the third and final round of qualifying and was issued a five-position grid penalty as well, dropping him from 10th to 15th place.

Belgian Grand Prix betting prediction
It’s always hard to bet against Verstappen or Hamilton, and the Belgian Grand Prix is no different. While the feel-good story of qualifying was Russell on the front row, the idea of him winning the race in a Williams is simply not something to put money on, even as a front row starter at +4000.
Verstappen is the deserving favorite at -140 after taking the pole position, and Hamilton is set to start right behind him in third place with only Russell in between. Barring a disaster at the start, Verstappen and Hamilton will likely find themselves both in the two top like they have in most of the races that have been contested this season.
Hamilton at +200 could be a good deal, and you could always put money on both championship contenders to guarantee a profit as long as one of them wins (that strategy explained here).
With that being said, there is still the possibility for an upset winner like we saw with Esteban Ocon winning the Hungarian Grand Prix. But there are still drivers to avoid.
You probably should not bet on Bottas, considering the fact that he has the fourth best odds but is set to start all the way back in 13th place as a result of his grid penalty.
But don’t sleep on former Belgian Grand Prix winners Sebastian Vettel or Charles Leclerc at +5000, and we know what Pierre Gasly (+6600) is capable of in races that don’t necessarily go like many predict.
