Kurt Busch is set to drive for 23XI Racing in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, the team announced Friday. But one key detail was missing from that announcement.

After months of speculation, 23XI Racing confirmed on Friday evening that they are set to make the move from a one-car team to a two-car team in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, with Kurt Busch set to join the organization as their second driver.

Busch is set to drive the #45 Toyota with primary sponsorship from Monster Energy. Bubba Wallace is set to return for a second season behind the wheel of the #23 Toyota.

Along with this confirmation came the confirmation that the numbers on the sides of the cars are set to move forward, a move that had long been rumored in itself. 23XI Racing themselves didn’t confirm this, but their Busch confirmation video provided a nice segue into NASCAR’s confirmation of the expected change.

But this 23XI Racing announcement was still missing one key detail.

There was no confirmation as to whether or not Post Malone will be re-filming “Motley Crew” to feature Busch along with Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace.

Just kidding. Well, there wasn’t, but most NASCAR fans don’t care about that.

What was missing was a confirmation of which charter 23XI Racing will acquire (if any) to run the #45 Toyota for Busch in 2022.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

This has long been seen as the obstacle in the way of the team’s expansion for next year. Now they have announced that expansion, but without any news of a second charter.

The charter they use to run the #23 Toyota was purchased from the now defunct Germain Racing team last year, so they do own it and are have not simply had it leased to them.

There had been rumors of a potential charter transaction or even a merger with Front Row Motorsports, which currently run two chartered entries, but whether or not this will come to fruition remains to be seen.

With that being said, it is hard to imagine the young team opting to double their car count in year number two without having the advantage of a charter for that second car.
