Teams with open seats for 2023: No. 5 – Petty GMS Motorsports

Speaking of Noah Gragson, Petty GMS Motorsports won’t have an open seat for much longer, as it is believed that Gragson will replace Ty Dillon behind the wheel of the #42 Chevrolet after the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.

It was revealed earlier this summer that Dillon would not be back for a second season with the team in 2023, and the move was not super shocking to anybody.

In 23 races this season, Dillon has finished no higher than 10th place, and he sits in 30th in the point standings. Even without the 35-point penalty he and the #42 team were issued at Pocono Raceway, he would only be sitting in 29th.

Compare that to teammate Erik Jones, who sits in 14th place and would be sitting in 11th if not for his 35-point penalty. He has finished in the top 10 on eight occasions this year, and the team made the wise decision to give him a long-term contract extension.

Their two-car operation is set to consist of Gragson and Jones for the foreseeable future.

Who will end up in the open seats at these organizations next year? Will we see more contract extensions signed? Will we see more driver changes announced in the near future?
