Entering the final race of the chase in 2012 Jimmie Johnson was only 20 points behind Brad Keselowski. At the time many believed that Johnson would find a way to overcome the 20-point deficit and win this sixth championship. However, that was not the case and Johnson would have to wait until 2013 to win his sixth Sprint Cup Series championship.
