Jeff Gordon wins at Martinsville
After Darlington, many long-time fans wondered if there ever would be such a “feel good” moment in the 2015 season. After all, what could top the allure and excitement generated by one of the sport’s marquee events returning to its traditional spot on the schedule and subsequently restoring order to what some believe was a terrible injustice?
Those questions were answered after the dust settled from the Kenseth/Logano feud at Martinsville and Jeff Gordon held off A.J. Allmendinger and Jamie McMurray for the win in perhaps the sport’s most emotional moment since Gordon’s 5th win at Indianapolis in July of 2014.
Was he perhaps aided in victory by Logano’s absence, when Joey clearly had the strongest car that day? Yes. But a win is a win, and at the end of one’s career they don’t ask “how,” they ask “how many.” The win propelled Gordon to one of the four championship-contending spots in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
That’s all Jeff can ask for. A chance. A chance at a fifth championship in this his final season behind the wheel. NASCAR CEO Brian France thinks the sport needs more “game 7 walk-off” moments. What could be better than the ultimate walk-off on November 22 if Gordon is to eclipse the other three that day and say, “thank you very much” one last time?
