NASCAR: Jeff Burton’s Five Most Significant Wins
By Mike Hutton
Number 5: Texas – April 6, 1997 – Interstate Batteries 500
Significance: First Cup win
Commentary: While this was Burton’s first Cup series win, it was also the inaugural race held at Texas Motor Speedway. The race itself was a bit of a fiasco with a first-lap, first-turn crash that involved 13 cars and eliminated some notable contenders and which set the tone for the rest of the day. Throughout the day, there would be 10 cautions for 73 laps. Burton led the final 58 laps en-route to his win. Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Terry Labonte and Ricky Rudd rounded-out the top five.
