The Verizon IndyCar Series is returning to Phoenix International Raceway for the first time since 2005. The one-mile dogleg oval is most recently known for hosting NASCAR races, but it has a rich history with open-wheel and Indy-style racing.

Phoenix opened in 1964 and quickly established itself as one, if not the, premier open-wheel track in the West. Its open-wheel racing roots stretch back to the golden years of the United States Auto Club and they reach into the world of CART and the Indy Racing League. The grandstands even include references to open-wheel greats like A.J. Foyt and Jimmy Bryan. Now it’s about to come full circle and establish roots with the unified Verizon IndyCar Series.

Over the years, the short oval in the desert has brought fans intense battles, dominant performances, and historic races. We’ve picked out the Top Five IndyCar races at Phoenix International Raceway. Read on to see our list.
