Contender No. 3: Kurt Busch

Stats at Talladega:

  • Wins: 0
  • Top-5’s: 6
  • Top-10’s: 15
  • Laps Led: 150

Kurt Busch is one driver that is looking for his first win this season and his first win at Talladega overall. Why not kill two birds with one stone?

Though he hasn’t made it to Victory Lane at Talladega, Busch has led laps in 24 of his 30 starts. He had a nice little stretch of top-10 finishes from 2004-2007, then stumbled upon hard times, finishing in the top-10 just twice in six seasons. Since joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014, Busch has rediscovered some of his past luck with encouraging signs over the past four races at the track.

The reason Busch poses a threat to win this Sunday is because of the speed we’ve seen out of his car all year long. He won back-to-back poles at Atlanta and Las Vegas and has seven top-10 finishes so far this season. He has been in contention a couple of times, like at Richmond and Bristol, and he’s managed to lead at least 30 laps in four different races.

Though Busch has never won at Talladega, he has the second-most top-10’s among active drivers. That’s something that’s going to work in his favor on Sunday.
