Loser: Carl Edwards

Carl Edwards came in as last season’s winner of the Coca-Cola 600. With two wins under his belt this season, he was looking for more.

Edwards started in 9th place and had made it all the way up into the top-5 when disaster struck on Lap 296. He attempted to slow down as he entered pit road but was hit with a speeding penalty. On his way back around to pass through pit lane, he entered too fast again, leading to a stop-and-go penalty.

After all was said and done, Edwards was two laps down and never quite recovered. He gained one lap back but ultimately dug himself into too deep of a hole, finishing 18th.

He had this to say after the race (via NASCAR.com):

"“I screwed it up. I think we had a solid top-four car, maybe a top-three car so it’s really tough to swallow that one. It’s a mistake; I better learn from it.”"

Overall, it wasn’t that big of an issue for Edwards as he only dropped one position in the standings and still has a guaranteed Chase spot, but getting hit with back-to-back penalties is always frustrating.
