Xfinity: Kyle Larson Wins Rain-Shortened Race At Pocono
By Alex Herbst
In the inaugural race for the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Pocono, the rain stopped the field short, giving the win to Kyle Larson.
The tricky triangle in the mountains of Pennsylvania is not only known for its challenging three turns, but the often challenges that Mother Nature brings to racing there. The NASCAR Xfinity Series faced those head on this Saturday, in the inaugural series race at the Pocono Raceway. In the end, the weather would win out after 53 laps, with Kyle Larson in the lead, inheriting the race win.
Joe Gibbs Racing dominated qualifying once again, with all three of their cars in the top three and young Erik Jones on pole. However, pit strategy would come into play early and often, shuffling up the field and putting Cup Series driver Kyle Larson near the front. He would receive help from JR Motorsports driver Elliott Sadler on multiple restarts, pushing the #42 Chevy to the front in turn 1. And when the rain came out on Lap 52, it was Larson sitting at the front of the pack, and would be declared the winner.
Erik Jones would bounce back from deep in the pack after being caught out on pit strategy to finish second, while Ty Dillon converted his strength at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to success at Pocono in third. Kyle Busch, who looked like the strongest car in the race at the beginning of the event, came home fourth followed by fellow Cup competitor Joey Logano in fifth.
