Beyond  The Flag’s weekly series Checkered Countdown returns to provide fans an insight on the history of each track the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at throughout the season.

As the first of two road course races of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series schedule approaches, with the 40 drivers competing for the win at Sonoma Raceway, we are going to analyze more in depth the five best finishes in the history of this track built in 1968. In 1988 this track replaced the road course of Riverside on the Winston Cup schedule and Jeff Gordon currently holds almost any kind of records at the track. Last year, Kyle Busch got the checkered flag, beginning an impressive streak of four victories in five races that would eventually secure him a spot in the Chase.
