In a year where Team Penske has dominated the Verizon IndyCar Series, it was their rivals in the paddock taking advantage in the final seconds of qualifying on Saturday. Scott Dixon will start from position number one for Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto, edging Helio Castroneves at the last moment.
Dixon would win the pole by just four one-hundredths of a second over Castroneves, who put in the strongest performance of the Team Penske drivers in the Firestone Fast Six.
Simon Pagenaud, who leads the points championship entering the Honda Indy Toronto, would qualify third after setting some fast laps on the black tires. The third of the Penske cars to make the Fast Six on Saturday was Will Power, who would qualify fourth.
Sebastien Bourdais and James Hinchcliffe would round out the qualifiers in the Honda Indy Toronto Fast Six with two strong runs for a pair of favorites among the Toronto fans.
The Mayor of Hinchtown is the hometown boy racing again on his city streets, while Bourdais is the winningest driver on the circuit. The No. 11 showed great speed in both practice and qualifying. He and fellow Frenchman Pagenaud were some of the fastest in Friday’s sessions.
The Honda Indy Toronto was a qualifying session to forget for the Honda teams, particularly Andretti Autosport. Only three of the top ten on Saturday were Hondas, led by the hard-charging Hinchcliffe of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Conor Daly of Dale Coyne Racing.
Many of the Honda drivers complained of a bumpy track, chiefly Ryan Hunter-Reay, as their teams continue to try and muster up some of their momentum from winning the Indianapolis 500.
In other notable but disappointing results, Juan Pablo Montoya bounced back from a practice crash (which you can watch below) to qualify ninth for the Honda Indy Toronto.
Meanwhile Josef Newgarden, still nursing an injured hand after his hard crash at Texas, made it to eighth. He is the defending race winner.
