One year to the day that the racing world lost Formula One driver Jules Bianchi, tributes are coming in from across the paddock area.
It was one year ago today that the Formula One world, and the world of motorsports as a whole, was rocked by the tragic passing of former Marussia driver Jules Bianchi. In a coma since October 2014 due to a severe crash at the Suzuka circuit during the Japanese Grand Prix, Bianchi never recovered from his injuries, and passed on the same weekend that F1 raced at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
One year later, the memory of Bianchi lives on throughout the F1 world. After all, his death was the first death to hit the world championship since the death of Ayrton Senna at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. Tributes, memories, and positive messages have been coming in throughout the day on social media, in honor of the late Bianchi.
The future was very bright for Jules, having scored the first ever points for the Marussia F1 Team at Monaco in 2014. No one would have expected some months later that he would be severely injured in a crash in the wet in Japan, cutting his life short. He was a friend of many in the garage, including those at Scuderia Ferrari, where he was set to become their third driver had the world championship moved to three cars per team.
The series would honor Bianchi after his crash while he was in a coma at the next race, the 2014 Russian Grand Prix. More tributes would come at the 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix, following news of his passing. Among those leading the charge to honor him was fellow countryman Jean-Eric Vergne, who spearheaded the effort of F1 drivers to wear patches on their helmet in support. A moment of silence was also held at both races for the former driver.
Be sure to check back throughout the day as more drivers, teams, fans, and journalists honor and remember the late Jules Bianchi. Here is just a sampling of the touching tributes, from across the entire Formula One paddock:
