As the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series moves to different tracks every weekend, with our Checkered Countdown series we try to bring you the best finishes ever occurred at each venue on the schedule. This week we analyse the history of Watkins Glen International.

Monday’s race at Pocono ended with the huge surprise of Chris Buescher going to victory lane, but it was not a thrilling finish since the race ended under caution. We hope things will be different this upcoming weekend at Watkins Glen, a track where in the final laps you often see something particular and unexpected happen.

Just a couple quick facts about the track: opened in 1956 it has hosted races of many different series, including NASCAR, Formula One and Indy Car. Tony Stewart holds the record for the most wins at this track with five. Watkins Glen International has gone through many reconfigurations over the years: in 1992 in particular, a chicane was introduced on the backstretch to slow down the cars, following the death of J.D. McDuffie the previous year.

Now let’s go through the five best finishes at the Glen.
