Defending champion Johnny Sauter took his first win of the 2017 campaign by taming the Monster Mile at Dover on Friday afternoon.

In a race that saw many leaders, many strategies, and many young guns, it was the seasoned veteran who took the victory at the end of the day. Johnny Sauter may not have been up front the most, or had the fastest truck, but he rolled to victory lane for the first time in 2017 at Dover on Friday in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Sauter, the defending series champion, held off his hard-charging teammate Kaz Grala to earn his first ever win at the Monster Mile. Grala, who came home in 2nd, led a pack of strong performing young racers among the truckers. Grant Enfinger, Ben Rhodes, and Austin Cindric rounded out the top 5.

The two strongest trucks in the race likely were Ryan Truex and Ben Rhodes. Truex, racing at his home track, won the first stage with a strong performance early, only to get caught by pit strategy at the end. Meanwhile, Ben Rhodes again had a good chance at victory, leading the most laps for the second time in 2017, but failing to convert.

Some drivers were not fortunate enough to finish today’s Bar Harbor 200 at Dover. Christopher Bell and Todd Gilliland, both racing for Kyle Busch Motorsports, were out with mechanical problems after promising starts. Meanwhile, BKR’s Chase Briscoe, who started on pole, had a chance at the win wiped away by a loose tire that fell off after his final pit stop.
