NASCAR: 2017 Southern 500 Qualifying Results – Harvick Happy Again
By Alex Herbst
Kevin Harvick is happy again, starting from the pole for Sunday’s historic Southern 500 from Darlington Raceway for NASCAR’s throwback weekend.
The Southern 500 has once again become one of NASCAR‘s premier races, with the throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway now as one of the most popular among fans and teams alike. With throwback paint schemes, old hair and clothing styles, and the return of some of NASCAR’s favorite former announcers, it is a weekend to remember.
Kevin Harvick started off his weekend with a memorable run to the pole for Sunday’s event. Leading all three rounds of qualifying on Saturday afternoon, Harvick put his throwback #4 Ford in the top spot. Martin Truex Jr. will start alongside Harvick in the first row.
In the heat of early September at the Lady in Black, the track has been slick and slippery. Many drivers earned a Darlington stripe during their qualifying runs, including Ty Dillon and Aric Almirola. Conserving tires was the name of the game during at least the first two rounds, which may have cost Chase Elliott a chance to make it to the final round.
