IndyCar: Could Pietro Fittipaldi drive for Dale Coyne Racing in 2018?
By Asher Fair
Pietro Fittipaldi test drove for Dale Coyne Racing on Wednesday. Could he drive for the team part-time in the 2018 IndyCar season?
Almost all drivers and teams are set for the 2018 IndyCar season. One team that still does not have a solidified driver lineup is Dale Coyne Racing. Sebastien Bourdais, 38, has been confirmed as the driver of the #18 Honda for the team. However, the drivers of the #19 Honda have not yet been confirmed.
Dale Coyne Racing have confirmed that at least two drivers will share time behind the wheel of the #19 Honda in the 2018 IndyCar season, as no driver has come up with the funds to drive full-time. Will 21-year-old Pietro Fittipaldi be one of those two or more drivers?
Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time Formula One champion, 1989 IndyCar champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, is the 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion, the 2014 Protyre Formula Renault Championship champion, the 2015-2016 MRF Challenge Formula 2000 champion and the 2017 World Series Formula V8 3.5 champion.

Over the course of his professional racing career, which began in 2011, Fittipaldi has also driven in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.
He test drove for Dale Coyne Racing on Wednesday at Sebring International Raceway along with 19-year-old Zachary Claman DeMelo, who drove in the Indy Lights Series in both of the last two seasons.
Dale Coyne Racing team owner Dale Coyne was impressed with the tests of both drivers, according to Motorsport.com.
"“Zachary knew what he was doing in the car, he adapted well, understood the changes we were making, and we were very pleased.“As far as lap times were concerned, it was very tight between the two of them – within two tenths – so I was happy with Pietro, too. He adapted well. I think the Formula 3.5 is a good car to prepare for IndyCar – about the same size and about the same downforce now that we’ve lost a bunch.“He had to understand how the tire performance peaked – that’s the tricky bit with these cars, and it takes experience. But he took the whole thing very, very seriously – got there early, left late, studied data, watched onboard videos. And his feedback was very, very good.”"
