Mario Kart-style racing is set to be introduced to Formula E in the 2018-2019 season, as the FIA have formalized the plan for it.

The FIA have confirmed that the 13-race 2018-2019 Formula E season, for which the schedule was just released, is set to feature Mario Kart-style racing as a result of the addition of what is currently dubbed the “Hyperboost”, although it will not be referred to by that name when it goes into effect once the season begins in December with the Ad Diriyah ePrix in Saudi Arabia.

The 2018-2019 Formula E season is the first season that is set to feature the new Spark Generation 2 car, which is also known as the Gen 2, and as a result of this new addition of the Hyperboost, the new car is set to experience a new style of racing throughout the season depending on how often drives decide to utilize the “Hyperboost”.

The Hyperboost effectively allows each driver to increase the power in his car from 200 kilowatts (268.204 horsepower) to 225 kilowatts (301.730 horsepower) while driving through what will be considered activation zones. These activation zones will be off the racing line so that drivers who use them will be slowed down.

Here is what a statement from the FIA says about how often drivers will be able to take advantage of these activation zones to utilize the Hyperboost throughout each race, according to Autosport.

"“The number of activations and the duration of the use of the higher power mode will be determined at each race by the FIA, according to the individual features of the circuit.”"

The drivers who receive the FanBoost in a given race will be allowed to activate it only when they are in the higher power as a result of the Hyperboost. The FanBoost will raise the power of their cars to 250 kilowatts (335.256 horsepower).

Why this racing has been compared to the racing in the classic and widely popular video game Mario Kart is because of the fact that there are different ways by which to boost your speed when competing in races in that game.

This racing has also been compared to IndyCar’s push-to-pass system and Formula 1’s drag reduction system (DRS). However, it is safe to say that Mario Kart-style racing is the closest comparison to this new type of Formula E racing, as it by far the least conventional style of racing out of the racing in Mario Kart, IndyCar and Formula 1 and the new type of Formula E racing is certainly not conventional.
